How long does dog training take?

Basic mechanics — name response, sit, down, place, loose-leash walking, coming when called on leash — typically take a few weeks of consistent daily practice to teach. Teaching a behavior is fast. Making it reliable is the long part.

Getting the same behavior at the park, near other dogs, at the door with guests arriving, or off leash takes months, not weeks. Every new environment is effectively a new lesson until the dog generalizes.

Reactivity, anxiety and aggression cases run on the dog's timeline, not ours. Progress is usually measurable within the first few sessions, but the overall arc is measured in months of managed exposure and consistency at home.

Inconsistency between household members, practicing in only one location, rehearsing the problem behavior between sessions, and skipping the boring foundation work in favor of the exciting stuff.
