How does e-collar training work, and when is it appropriate?

The most common goal is off-leash reliability: recall and direction at a distance, in real environments, where a leash cannot reach. It gives the handler a way to communicate the same information they would give through a leash.

The dog already knows the behavior on leash before the collar means anything. Working levels are found individually and are typically low enough that an observer sees nothing but the dog turning its head. Fit, contact and conditioning are what make it humane and effective.

Correct fit, rotating placement, never leaving it on all day, never using it on a dog that does not understand the behavior, and never using it as an outlet for frustration. Introduction should be done with a trainer rather than out of the box at home.
